PART 4 Saturna Island
EVEN FOR MANY WHO love the Gulf Islands and visit them regularly, Saturna Island can seem a little mysterious and a little remote—and thus often remains unvisited. With its small population, rugged topography and tricky ferry service, the island can seem best relegated to the bottom of any To Visit list.
Those who love secret beaches, however, might well be pleased that others are discouraged from visiting this island—especially when they know this small, mountainous island has some of the most picturesque spots among the Gulf Islands.
Not only are so many of the beaches beautiful, but also they are generally easy to reach. Most shore access routes are signposted, and most are accompanied by an assertive red-and-white sign bearing an identifying number (included in the following descriptions in order to help you confirm your location).
In spite of, and in part, because of, the well-known rugged topography of the island, many of the spots are not only stunning but also unlike anything else found in the Gulf Islands. Primary among these are Winter Cove, with its dramatic surges of current through Boat Passage, the entire East Point Road hugging the island’s north coast, and, most strikingly, the exposed bluffs and perfect pebble beach of East Point Park at the island’s east end. Those who neglect to drive over precipitous Brown Ridge to Thomson Park on a magical shelf of sun-baked vineyards on the island’s south side miss out on one of the most remarkable experiences in the islands.
